Picture this: you’re at work and your co-worker is having a terrible day. He came in late, looked like a mess, and his work that’s due today isn’t even close to being finished. If you have poor emotional intelligence, you may not give any of this a second thought. This can damage your relationship and inhibit communication. However, an individual with more emotional intelligence may see him struggling and offer help. When you have emotional intelligence you will be able to control your own and recognize other people’s emotions.

For example, if an employee shows he has emotional intelligence he is more likely to get a raise because he will be more considerate to his boss and coworkers. The same is true for students. If a student shows that they have emotional intelligence, they will be more likely to receive better grades because of their ability to work with classmates.

1.     Practice self-awareness

You can’t understand others’ emotions if you can’t understand your own.The best way to figure out your emotions is to make a habit of self-reflection. Figure out what your interests are!

2.     Find how this skill impacts your life

After you better understand yourself, learn where emotional intelligence can benefit your life. Understanding where you need to apply it will help you to be mindful in these situations. This will only build on itself and reveal new areas where improved emotional intelligence is useful.  

3.    Practice altruism

Being altruistic means putting others before yourself. Start by being aware of people’s lives, personality, and habits. Reach out and offer help to those in need. Even if the help is rejected, letting them know you are there for them is an important component of emotional intelligence.

4.     Practice flexibility

A flexible person can adjust to situations and emotions to provide a healthier work space. This includes knowing your limits and accommodating other people’s schedules, which are actually important to strong emotional intelligence.

5.     Practice emotional intelligence

If you want to be better at chess, you should practice chess. Emotional intelligence is the same way. It may be simple but, practicing emotional intelligence is the best way to improve. Exercising effective emotional intelligence in your job, school, and relationships can drastically help your life. As you practice, it will become easier until it is just part of who you are.
