Project Overview

The English Department has contracted with Profwrite to produce educational and promotional documents that promote the value of an English degree. The documents will demonstrate that English majors are prepared for a number of professional opportunities. We have identified several projects to investigate the value of an English degree.

For phases 1 and 2 of this contract, each writer will join a team, pursue a research focus, and produce a set of three different documents, 1) web-ready and 2) print-ready documents, and 3) a social media post. In phase 3, writers will pull from previous research to create a multimedia or visual document.

Promoting the Value of an English Degree Proposal.

Phase 1

Teams will be assigned to each of the following projects in phase 1. Each member of the team, including the team administrator, will be responsible for producing a set of documents based on individual research.

Skills for Any Job

Skills for Any Job

English majors develop what is often described as “soft skills,” which are crucial to a majority of professional jobs, but which aren’t easy to describe and relate to job functions listed in job descriptions. Mini-reports relating “English” skills to job functions can help students identify the value of an English degree to the job market.

Deliverables: Each team member will produce a set of documents focused on the skills of English major and their related work functions.

Careers for Concentrations

Careers for Concentrations

English majors can focus their studies in linguistics, literary studies, creative writing, professional writing, or folklore. Each of these concentrations give students skills that fit specific careers. Concentration profiles will be created to appeal to students in individual concentrations. Profiles will focus on the specialized skills of the concentration and jobs that use these skills.

Deliverables: Each team member will produce a set of documents for one of the five English concentrations, linguistics, literary studies, creative writing, professional writing, or folklore.

Phase 2

Teams will be assigned to each of the following projects in phase 2. Each member of the team, including the team administrator, will be responsible for producing a set of documents based on individual research.

Alumni Profiles

Alumni Profiles

Alumni can be models for students, demonstrating that the degree provides options when entering the working world. Alumni who have succeeded in careers not typically associated with an English degree will demonstrate the versatility of an English degree. Profiles can let alumni share how an English degree prepared them for their careers. Team members will identify successful alumni who have a BA in English, interview them, and create profile pages that highlight how what they learned as an English major impacted their career.

Deliverables: Each team member will produce a set of alumni profiles based on interviews with at least five alumni.

Advanced Degrees

Advanced Degrees

Students often aren’t aware of the purpose of graduate school, the options that are available to them, or how to prepare to attend graduate school. English majors are prepared to get graduate degrees in fields beyond English, including library science and Education. English also prepares students for professional schools like law school and med school. Mini-reports will outline options for post-baccalaureate study and profile likely programs for English majors.

Deliverables: Each team member will produce a set of documents describing graduate school options for English majors.

Phase 3

In phase 3, writers may choose to work as a team or on individual projects. Each writer will be responsible for producing a multimedia or visual document.

Multimedia or Visual Documents

Multimedia or Visual Documents

Research can reveal data, facts, visual media, etc. that do not fit into the a profile or report, but can make compelling content for infographics, videos, animated gifs, or other social media content. Using past research teams will create multimedia or visual documents.

Deliverables: Each team member will produce one multimedia or visual document.
